BUDAPEST, Hungary — The firefighting helicopter has been hit by a rocket on the Hungarian border, firefighting officials said.
The fire fighting helicopter is currently on the way to the area, where the crash occurred, a spokesman for the Hungarian National Guard (MNV) said.
The helicopter was shot down on the border on Sunday.
The helicopter was patrolling near the village of Ségár, in the Hungarian-Austrian border town of Morá, when it was struck by a firefighting rocket, according to a statement from the MNV.
The MNV said the rocket hit the helicopter’s rotor blades, destroying them.
The helicopters mission was to search for missing Hungarian migrants in Morá and help in the rescue of other people, the statement said.
