‘Firefighter who tried to save people trapped in tunnel fire: ‘They were so frightened they couldn’t breathe’

A firefighter from the state of North Carolina has been named as the man who tried in vain to save a woman trapped in a tunnel fire in the state.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Halon Fire Chief Mark D. McQuinn said he was “heartbroken” to learn of the death of 32-year-old Karen W. Jones, a member of the group Firefighters for Peace.

Jones was on the way to work on the 1st Street Tunnel in Wilmington, North Carolina, when the fire broke out.

Firefighters from North Carolina’s firefighting community came to her aid, rescuing her.

McQuinn also thanked the members of the firefighting organization who were present at the time.

He said they were “just as heroic” as the firefighter who saved her life.

McGrady and Wiginton were not the first firefighters to die in the tunnel fire.

In 2015, firefighter Justin Wigerson was also killed in the blaze.
